Luc Frieden Strengthens Bilateral Ties with Singapore During an Official Visit
Prime Minister Luc Frieden paid an official visit to Singapore on September 7 and 8, 2026, marking an important milestone in the deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
This visit is part of an effort to strengthen ties, following President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s state visit in 2025 and the recent opening of the Luxembourg Embassy in Singapore last July. The Prime Minister held talks with his Singaporean counterpart, Lawrence Wong, followed by a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Singapore.
As part of the prestigious Singapore Lecture Series, the Prime Minister delivered a speech titled “Autonomy with Purpose: Europe in a Shifting World,” in which he outlined his vision for Europe in the face of geopolitical and economic changes. The Prime Minister emphasized European sovereignty in the areas of defense, energy, and technology, based on the European Union’s founding values of peace, human rights, and democracy, adapted to the new international context of the 21st century.
Focused on sectors that drive innovation and shared growth, this official visit highlighted the joint ambitions of Luxembourg and Singapore in key areas, including space, technology, and finance.
The two nations share a common vision on international issues and are committed to a rules-based international order. Like Luxembourg, Singapore strongly advocates for respect for international law and multilateral principles, which are essential to the security and prosperity of all states.
This visit provided an opportunity to jointly analyze current geopolitical challenges, reinforcing the commitment to cooperation between two countries determined to play an active role in a complex international environment. During his bilateral meetings, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the importance of strong alliances and cooperation with partners. The leaders also agreed to strengthen collaboration in the financial, space, and data sectors in the coming months.
Luxembourg in Europe and Singapore in Asia are recognized as hubs for their stability, predictability, and expertise, particularly in the field of financial services. In this context, the Prime Minister participated in several discussions focused on strengthening economic ties between the two countries, notably during a roundtable co-organized by The Economist and the Singapore Business Federation.
The meetings also revealed that Singapore has a particular interest in Luxembourg’s efforts in the space sector. In this context, the Prime Minister also inaugurated SES’s new Asia-Pacific regional headquarters.
Finally, the Prime Minister attended a presentation on housing policy in Singapore, a topic of particular interest to Luxembourg.
